Race Details!

Race week has arrived!  Here are some important notes for the week ahead:

1)      Bib and t-shirt (and timing chip for 5K/half marathon) pick-up will be available at the Lion’s Den on Saturday morning from 7:15 am to 8:45 am.  Please ensure you arrive in plenty of time to collect these goodies prior to race time.

2)      The Penguin Run has attracted a huge crowd this year – thanks for your interest!  The youth run will be held on site at the Enfield Lion’s Den (162 Old Enfield Road, Enfield), and the 5K and half marathon will start and finish at the Lion’s Den.  Parking is limited at the Lion’s Den; all participants will not be able to park on site.  The alternatives are parking nearby, or using our shuttle service.

There is parking available nearby at the following locations: (a) the wide shoulder of the northbound lane of the Old Enfield Road (the southbound shoulder, the side nearest the Lion’s Den, MUST be kept clear for our 5K and half marathon).  If you park along the Old Enfield Road, please ensure you are completely off the paved road, with all four tires on gravel.  (b) Approximately 300m north of the Lion’s Den is Mayflower Drive, and 200m further north of Mayflower is Malcolm Lucas Drive.  Both side roads provide plenty of parking along the shoulder.

We will have a shuttle running continuously from the Enfield Legion (former race headquarters at 50 Old Enfield Rd) to the Lion’s Den.  The shuttle will depart approximately every ten minutes.  You can park at the Legion, or in the area, and take the shuttle to the race location.  Volunteers will be on site at the Legion to provide direction.  Please ensure you include shuttle wait time and transfer time when planning your arrival time at the Lion’s Den.  Carpooling is highly recommended!

3)      The 5K and Half Marathon begin together at 9am, from the entrance to the Lion’s Den, and are run on paved roads.  The roads are not closed to traffic, so please be aware of vehicles while running.  The youth run also begins at 9am.  It will be run in waves, by age group, to allow for smaller groups of similarly aged children to run together.   This format means parents of youth runners will likely not be able to run the 5K / half marathon and watch their children run.  If you have signed up for the 5K or half marathon and have children running the youth run, we will gladly defer your registration until next year.  While the exact time of each wave of the youth run cannot be provided, we will begin with the Tykes (born 2008 and up).  The tykes will not run 1.5K, they will run a modified loop that is closer to 300 metres in length.  The next age groups will be Midget and Youth runners (born in ’96 – ’00).  The next age groups will be Mosquito (2005, 2006, 2007), PeeWee (2003, 2004), then Bantam (2001, 2002).  There may be multiple waves per age group depending on size of group.  Please plan on being on site for the morning, from bib pick up until your child(ren) completes their run.  There is a wonderful playground, and face painting on site to help keep everyone entertained – there are rumours that a penguin may even be sighted!

4)      Awards for the youth run will be presented throughout the morning, following the various age group runs (age groups named above).  The awards for the 5K will be presented at approximately 10am.  The awards for the half marathon will be presented at approximately 11:30am.  The 5K and half marathon will recognize the top three open winners race, as well as top junior, master, senior master, golden master and platinum master by gender.  There will also be delicious food prepared by Cup of Soul café available post run.

We look forward to seeing all runners and supporters on Saturday!  We can always use volunteers to help the morning of the race – please spread the word, and have interested parties contact the race director.  Oh, and please bring good weather with you!
